Ok now for all frens this post contain Buddhism... sth i learn a few days ago in our BuddY weekly dhamma class.... The Five Precepts.. Jus wanna share.. i learn a lot from dhamma class n hopefully i will able to apply them in my daily life. This is my first time getting close to Buddhism although i hav been a "Buddhist" for 19 years i never knew about the Four Noble truth n the noble eightfold pathway...
The following are the five precepts (pañca-sikkhāpada) or five virtues (pañca-sīla) rendered in English and Pali:
I undertake the training rule to abstain from taking life.
Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from taking what is not given.
Adinnādānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from sexual misconduct.
Kāmesu micchācāra veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from false speech.
Musāvāda veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from drinks and drugs that cause heedlessness
Surā-meraya-majja-pamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
Taken from Wikipedia
From wat i remember, the five precepts r as guidance to wat we should avoid then a higher level than tat to do the five virtues which is the opposite of wat tat is abstained in the five precepts.. Like for the second precept don steal, we should give generously to those in needs, then for fourth, we should only say the truth..
Ok now in details
For the first precept, well basically i'm jus quoting n recall wat i had previously learn well i was inspired to take less meat after realising tat those poor animals are tortured n killed for us... It's like a chain reaction.. we eat they are killed... According to the speaker, a fren of hers used to be a butcher, people who slaughter animals... told her tat the animals really cried before they r slaughtered.. it's a really sad scene as the animals also hav feeling they can sense the blood n knew tat that is their fate... Try to think about tat... U live to be killed??? I hope i can really persist on reducing my meat intake both for my health n also those poor animals.. well this is really up to us... Remember we hav choices to choose from.. Oh ya a tip reminded by my roommate.. pandan leaves repel cockroach..
Second not to steal well she told us tat buying pirated cds is also a form of stealing n it's breaking the five precept cos no point lying about tat but then she said it still up to us on how much we want to do, how far we wish to take it.. Oh ya try to lend a hand to those in need...
Thirdly sexual misconduct well she say it also includes all the sixth sense ( In Buddhism mind is the 6th sense).. so don overdo anything, don overindulge in watever tat will harm our senses..
Fourthly the not lying well... not lying i will try my best to haha... Oh ya.. there are a simple rule to follow when we wan to say sth, first is it a truth then is it beneficial to us n others if we say it out? third say it at correct time n last say it out of compassion not for fun or revenge.. N also for gossipers, a reminder gossip hurts other n urself too.. so don gossip n write bad things about others too.. it will build up bad karma n also sth interesting in Pali gossip is samphappalapa (hope i got the spelling correct) it jus sampah bla bla bla... nice right?? (sampah means garbage n bla bla signifies nonsense)
Fifth haha easy one don ever ever take drugs never ever go near to drugs... N smoking also is against it... FYI it only takes one week of smoking for addiction... So STAY AWAY from it never try out of curiosity n i hate smokers haha
Well all this five precepts is only to guide us to train us to become a better person n it's still up to us to follow or not... Remember we r not forced to follow it we can choose either to or not.. N try it n if it doesn't suit u, u hav a choice to not follow it... N do everything out of good intention.. N a simple teaching to remember
Avoid Evil
Do Good
Purify ur mind..
